Voices of Volunteers
Welcome to this August edition of Voices of Volunteers, we hope you have been enjoying your summer. As always, we have plenty of volunteer experiences to share with you from all over the world, including a special new section "From the Archives" where we will share stories, quotes, photos and adventures from the older generations of SCI. Keep an eye out for it, it will be a regular feature!
So here's to the summer, to new beginnings, to workcamps, to volunteering, to long sunny days shared with newly made friends and to many more to come..
Peaceful greetings to you all.

Has volunteering inspired you to change your habits or even make changes to your life? Read how one volunteer decided to alter his path after taking part in a workcamp in Belgium.
Volunteers, Gisela and Rozalia, share their experiences from the SOS Children's Village Workcamp that took place in Hungary, 21 July - 1 August.
"When you spend time in an international group chatting, sleeping, eating, laughing, sweating and dancing together even in just two short weeks, these new people will inevitably stretch your ideas of others and rearrange the map of the world for you in the most unexpected and touching ways."
"When you arive at SCI Sri Lanka you are greeted by amazing people that make you feel welcome from the very begining. Very soon you experience you first cup of sweet tea.."

EVS volunteers write a letter from Hebron: "Keep in mind, dear friend, that if one day you decide to visit this land, that the settlements you will see around are illegal by International Law and that they are the biggest obstacle to any peace process."

Great news! Our Create a Climate for Peace (C4P) campaign will keep on rolling in 2015 as well. Due to the two international camp leader trainings and 60+ workcamps organised this year with the clear aim of promoting sustainable lifestyles and increasing knowledge of environmental issues, SCI decided to further highlight and expand on these topics. The project granted for next year is titled 'Youth empowerment for a sustainable Europe' and aims at strenghtening the ongoing efforts of nurturing climate justice on local and global levels. Hommage à Pierre Martin, by Malik M’Baye.
We came across this touching photograph of Pierre Martin (1912-1998) while diving in to the SCI archives. An economist, sociologist and life-long militant pacifist, he was jailed in 1939, at the beginning of World War II, because he was a conscientious objector. He was leader of one of the very first workcamps to take place in Algeria and even attempted to ride by bike from France to India to meet Gandhi!
